Bho na ’60-an gu tràth ‘sna ‘90-an, bha Bùth Mhicneacail
air an làrach far a bheil An Lanntair an-diugh. Bunaideach
do dhòigh-beatha Steòrnabhaigh agus tùs-shamhla de na
gnìomhachasan beag a bha luachmhor do shlighe-turasachd
tro na h-eileanan, bha a bhùth a reic “Gibhtean,
cuimhneachain & nìthean às-annas.” Bha iad sin ann an
catalog bliadhnail a bha air a chraobh-sgaoileadh air
feadh nan eilean. Gur tur an eisimeil luchd-solair agus
luchd-ciùird ionadail, le farsaingeachd na nithean mar
theisteanas air cho gleusta agus innleachdach `s a bha
muinntir nan eilean.
Anns tionndadh seo den chatalog airson 2021, tha
cruinneachadh de luchd-ealain, dealbhadairean agus
luchd-dèanamh a’ beachdachadh air de a’ bhitheadh iad a
reic anns a’ bhùth anns an latha an-diugh. Agus, le
luchd-turais a’ tilleadh do h-Alba, a’ sireadh
cuimhneachain as-ùr, dè thaghadh iad airson a thoirt
dhachaigh leotha agus de a dh’fhàgadh iad an seo.

From the late ‘60s to the early ‘90s, Nicolson’s Kiosk
stood on the plot of land now occupied by An Lanntair. A
staple of Stornoway life and an early example of the small
businesses servicing the tourist trail through the
Hebrides, the kiosk sold the “Gifts, Souvenirs & Fancy
Goods” which featured in its annual catalogue. Entirely
reliant on local suppliers and makers, its range of items
was a testament to Hebridean ingenuity and idiosyncrasy.
In this 2021 edition of the catalogue, a collective of
artists, designers and makers speculate on what the kiosk
might have for sale today. As visitors return to
Scotland’s landscape, shopping for new memories, what
might they take home with them, and what might they leave?
